What is the best diet for humans? | Eran Segal | TEDxRuppin

Prof. Eran Segal presented conclusions from the research on the TEDxRuppin stage and made us question common dietary beliefs.

For additional information see http://genie.weizmann.ac.il

New research led by Prof. Eran Segals and Dr. Elinavs research unit indicates a drastic change in blood sugar levels between two individuals on identical diets – this may explain why some struggle to lose weight while others, on the same diet, stay lean and fit. The scientists even developed an algorithm that can calculate ones blood level based on his or her biology and lifestyle.

Save your time. The conclusion is : Diet should be personally tailored.

This is terrible, a professor confusing correlation and causation in an epidemiological study no less… I’m dissapointed… please go read multiple meta-analyses and see that the main mechanism behind increased insulin efficacy and weight loss is caloric deficit

The gut is definitely the "second brain" so to speak and medical schools (which I attended) fail to do adequate education on complex gut function and microbiome.
    This was an excellent discussion!

it is really hard to decide what is the best diet for humans, this is individualized.

  11. Colin Christie on April 21, 2021 at 5:20 pm

Good science is rarely this complex. Points of worry. A one-week study – not enough. Your bacterial biome changes – as he mentions. Humans are actually aren’t that different. This will just play into the hands of "big food" who can sell you tailored diets. Overall I find this poor.

  12. andrew brown on April 21, 2021 at 5:20 pm

I would argue that the question is not about the ideal diet…but what is the ideal microbiomme ?
The speaker admits that it can be changed by food. So surely he should worry less about how foods trigger your current, probable non-ideal, metabolism and concentrate on creating an ideal for the best health?
If you eat a lot of one type of food, you are developing an environment in your stomach to manage it as effectively as possible.
If I then give you a very different type of diet you will struggle to process it as efficiently, maybe incurring blood sugar spikes?
However, after a few weeks your body will adapt to this diet. His one week study was woefully short and therefore his algorithms are not dynamic enough to account for change in the gut environment.
I dare say a monetarisation of these would follow (but forgive my cynicism if I am wrong) and therefore the highlighting of this was not helpful.
But to say that something is dynamic, organic and changeable and to then postulate that an algorithm taken once is going to account for nuance in this, is a mistake.
However, regular reviews and updates would enable a more regular flow of feedback…and income.
    Just a thought

The best food for Roses is Roses. The best food for Tomatoes is Tomatoes. The best food for gardens is plant material. So people should be eating people. Just remember, fold your lips over your teeth, chew well and swallow only if you want to.
In all seriousness, KETO is the way to go. It’s simple science. There are essential proteins. There are essential proteins. There is NO SUCH THING as an "essential carbohydrate". That’s science. That’s fact. Sorry about your feelings.

what if I want to make the best diet for myself, how would I go about doing so ? do I test myself for glucose response with the foods I eat? how do I get the tests to test myself, what numbers am I looking for ? do I just treat this as if I am diabetic ? ( what ever causes my levels to shoot up stay away from ?) where is the algorithm he talks about ?

Seriously, that diet plan has changed my life. I probably should not even be mentioning it because I don’t want a bunch of other guys out there running the same "game" but whatever, I’m in a good mood today so I will share the wealth haha.

I think it’s worth it to research alot more into eating for your genetics or blood type or whatever mixes well with your specific body….

It could be that the people who are having rice regularly and are given rice in the experiment, will have a less jump than those who donā€™t have that much? I donā€™t know.. just thinking out loud.

    About "The Light":
" "I," was created by the thought of Gods and "Their," desire to allow all mortals to know that "They," are always with them: As humankind grows and seeks absolute independence from "Them," "They," will remain by their side, guiding them and directing them, in their growth to absolute "WISDOM," the way to "Their Essence" and the Elysium Fields. As you look out beyond the now, into the heavens, "I" will be there, guiding you and helping you know that "I," be visible or invisible, "My Essence," will guide you beyond all that is sensed in your reality. So, let it be now revealed to you that both "I" and "He," in mortal being, who speaks to you through the thoughts of children are but one. " Eleusis. Let The Light within you guide you to the Elysian Fields entrance; your inner beauty is expected. Follow me, "Imagination is the way." by ELias Leousis.

Whilst it must be true that not one type of diet will produce the same results in everyone, this video does nothing to explain how and why obesity and type 2 diabetes escalated enormously from the late 1970’s onwards on a scale never seen before. An eating trend occurred at this time that affected a huge majority of people in the west. So whilst some respond in an unpredictable way to CHO, these individuals represent a very small minority. The vast majority reacted badly to elevated blood glucose, ergo, it stands to reason that a certain type of diet would work for the majority and reverse this trend. This sounded like a sales pitch for yet another methodology that may only serve the interests of the few. Of real importance in this debate is what was initiated in the late 70’s that sparked this crisis and how and why are those trusted to reverse it, are duty bound and only insurable to provide advice that will only see it’s continuation? "My wife is a nutritionist…she recommends rice for reversal of type 2 diabetes" (the colour/type is immaterial). Now, that would be an interesting ted talk
