Constipation

There are many causes of constipation, including:

  • Diet: Not eating enough fiber, not drinking enough fluids, and eating too much processed food can all contribute to constipation.
  • Medications: Some medications, such as pain relievers, antidepressants, and iron supplements, can cause constipation.
  • Medical conditions: Certain medical conditions, such as hypothyroidism, diabetes, and irritable bowel syndrome, can also cause constipation.
  • Pregnancy: Hormonal changes during pregnancy can also lead to constipation.
  • Lifestyle: Not getting enough exercise, ignoring the urge to have a bowel movement, and traveling can all contribute to constipation.

Symptoms of constipation can include:

  • Difficulty passing stool
  • Hard, dry stools
  • Feeling like you haven’t completely emptied your bowels
  • Abdominal pain or bloating
  • Straining during bowel movements
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea and vomiting

If you are experiencing constipation, there are a number of things you can do to relieve your symptoms, such as:

  • Eating a high-fiber diet
  • Drinking plenty of fluids
  • Getting regular exercise
  • Taking over-the-counter laxatives or stool softeners
  • Using suppositories

If you have constipation that is severe or does not improve with home treatment, you should see a doctor.
