These treatments are called antiretroviral therapy (ART). ART works by reducing the amount of HIV in the body to such a low level that it can’t cause AIDS or be spread to others. People who take ART as prescribed can expect to live a normal lifespan.
Researchers are still looking for a cure for HIV, but it’s a very complex virus. One of the challenges is that HIV can hide in immune system cells where medications can’t reach it. This means that even if someone stops taking ART, the virus can come back.
Scientists are working on new approaches to overcome these hurdles and find a cure for HIV.
