Stages of Chronic Kidney Disease [CKD]
In the early stages of CKD, there may be no symptoms. As the disease progresses, symptoms may include:
- Fatigue
- High blood pressure
- Swelling in the feet and ankles
- Shortness of breath
- Loss of appetite
- Nausea and vomiting
- Difficulty sleeping
- Back pain
- Dark urine
- Frequent urination
If you have any of these symptoms, it is important to see a doctor to get tested for CKD.
There is no cure for CKD, but there are treatments that can help to slow the progression of the disease and prevent complications. Treatment may include:
- Medications to control blood pressure and cholesterol
- Lifestyle changes, such as eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and maintaining a healthy weight
- Dialysis or kidney transplantation in the end stages of CKD
It is important to note that the GFR is not the only factor that determines the severity of CKD. Other factors, such as the presence of protein in the urine and the underlying cause of the kidney disease, can also play a role. Therefore, it is important to work with your doctor to develop a personalized treatment plan.
