The ROOT CAUSE of Acid Reflux & How To STOP IT! | Dr. Mark Hyman

Here are some common causes of acid reflux:
Hiatal hernia: This occurs when part of your stomach pushes up through the diaphragm, the muscle separating your chest from your abdomen. This can weaken the LES and make it easier for acid to reflux.
Diet: Certain foods and drinks can irritate your esophagus and trigger acid reflux. Common culprits include fatty or fried foods, spicy foods, citrus fruits, chocolate, coffee, alcohol, and carbonated beverages.
Being overweight or obese: Excess weight puts pressure on your abdomen, which can push up on your stomach and increase the likelihood of acid reflux.
Pregnancy: Hormonal changes during pregnancy can relax the LES and make you more prone to acid reflux.
Smoking: Smoking weakens the LES and irritates the lining of your esophagus.
Medications: Certain medications, such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and some antidepressants, can relax the LES or irritate your stomach.
If you experience acid reflux occasionally, there are lifestyle changes you can make to manage it. However, frequent or persistent acid reflux, known as GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), can irritate the esophagus and lead to complications. If you suspect you have GERD, it’s important to see a doctor for diagnosis and treatment.
