6 Warning Signs of Colon Cancer

There are no early symptoms of colon cancer, but as the cancer grows, it can cause some of the following symptoms:
A change in bowel habits, such as diarrhea, constipation, or narrowing of the stool
Rectal bleeding or blood in the stool
Persistent abdominal discomfort, such as cramps, gas, or pain
A feeling that the bowel doesn’t empty completely
Weakness or fatigue
Unexplained weight loss
If you have any of these symptoms, it is important to see a doctor right away. Early detection and treatment of colon cancer can improve the chances of survival.
The following tests can be used to screen for colon cancer:
Fecal occult blood test (FOBT): This test looks for blood in the stool.
Flexible sigmoidoscopy: This test uses a long, thin tube with a camera to look at the rectum and lower part of the colon.
Colonoscopy: This test uses a long, thin tube with a camera to look at the entire colon.
If any of these tests find abnormal cells, a biopsy may be done to remove a small piece of tissue for further testing.
The treatment for colon cancer depends on the stage of the cancer and the patient’s overall health. Treatment options may include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy.
With early detection and treatment, the survival rate for colon cancer is high. The five-year survival rate for people with colon cancer that is found early (when it is confined to the colon) is about 90%. The five-year survival rate for people with colon cancer that has spread to other parts of the body is about 60%.
