What Causes Burping? – Dr.Berg

Burping, also known as belching or eructation, is the body’s way of releasing excess air from the stomach. This air can come from swallowing air while eating or drinking, or from the breakdown of food by stomach acids and bacteria.
Here are some common causes of burping:
Swallowing air: This is the most common cause of burping. You swallow air throughout the day, especially when you eat or drink too quickly, chew gum, smoke, or suck on hard candy.

Carbonated beverages: When you drink carbonated beverages, such as soda or beer, you swallow gas along with the liquid. This gas can cause burping.
Certain foods: Some foods, such as beans, cabbage, and broccoli, can cause gas production in the stomach. This gas can then be released through burping.
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD): GERD is a condition in which stomach acid backs up into the esophagus. This can irritate the esophagus and cause belching.
Occasional burping is normal and not a cause for concern. However, if you are burping excessively, it may be a sign of an underlying medical condition. If you are concerned about your burping, see a doctor.
