Defending yourself from a dog attack
- Stay calm and do not run. Running will only trigger the dog’s prey drive and make it more likely to attack.
- Make yourself look as big as possible. Stand up straight, wave your arms, and yell.
- If the dog is close, try to grab its hind legs and pull them up. This will make it lose its balance and may give you a chance to escape.
- If the dog is biting you, try to pry its mouth open with your fingers. If you can’t do this, try to hit the dog in the eyes or nose.
- If you have something to defend yourself with, use it. A stick, a rock, or even your keys can be used to deter or fight off a dog.
It is important to remember that every dog attack is different. What works in one situation may not work in another. If you are ever attacked by a dog, the best thing to do is to try to stay calm and assess the situation. Use whatever means necessary to protect yourself and get away from the dog.
Here are some additional tips:
- If you are walking your own dog and you see another dog approaching, try to cross the street or turn around and walk away.
- If you are jogging or biking and you see a dog, try to slow down or stop.
- If you are in a park or other area where there are dogs, be aware of your surroundings and keep an eye out for any dogs that seem aggressive.
- If you are approached by a dog, do not make eye contact with it. This can be seen as a challenge.
- If a dog barks at you, do not scream or yell. This will only make the dog more excited.
By following these tips, you can help to reduce your chances of being attacked by a dog.
