How to Help a Choking Child or Adult (Everyone Must Know!)

  • Encourage them to cough forcefully.
  • Have them drink a glass of water or other liquid.
  • Give them a piece of bread or other soft food to chew.
  • If the food is visible, try to remove it with your fingers.

It is important to remember that food stuck in the throat can be a serious emergency. If the child is not able to speak or cough, they are not getting air and you need to call 911 immediately.

Here are some additional tips for helping a child who has food stuck in their throat:

  • Do not try to force the food down. This can make the obstruction worse.
  • Do not hit the child on the back. This can push the food further down into the airway.
  • If you are alone with the child, stay calm and keep talking to them until help arrives.

By following these steps, you can help to keep your child safe in the event of a food obstruction.
