Stress and anxiety. Stress and anxiety are the most common causes of insomnia. They can make it difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep.

Substance use. Alcohol, caffeine, and nicotine can all interfere with sleep.
Age. Insomnia is more common in older adults.
Other factors. Other factors that can contribute to insomnia include pregnancy, jet lag, shift work, and a noisy or uncomfortable sleep environment.
In some cases, the cause of insomnia is unknown.
How to improve insomnia
There are a number of things you can do to improve insomnia, including:
Stick to a regular sleep schedule. Go to bed and wake up at the same time each day, even on weekends.
Create a relaxing bedtime routine. This may include taking a warm bath, reading a book, or listening to calming music.
Make sure your bedroom is dark, quiet, and cool.
Avoid caffeine and alcohol before bed.
Get regular exercise, but avoid exercising too close to bedtime.
See a doctor if you have trouble sleeping for more than two weeks. There may be an underlying medical condition that is causing your insomnia.
