Cervical cancer is the development of abnormal cells on the surface of the cervix that grow uncontrollably and form a tumor.
The early stages of cervical cancer often do not cause any symptoms. As the cancer grows, it may cause the following symptoms:
Unusual vaginal bleeding, such as bleeding after intercourse, bleeding between periods, or bleeding after menopause
Watery or bloody vaginal discharge that may have a foul odor
Pelvic pain
Pain during intercourse
If cervical cancer spreads to other parts of the body, it may cause additional symptoms, such as:
Back pain
Leg swelling
Difficulty urinating
Difficulty having a bowel movement
Unexplained weight loss
Fatigue
If you experience any of these symptoms, it is important to see a doctor right away. Cervical cancer is highly treatable if it is caught early.
Here are some additional tips for preventing cervical cancer:
Get regular Pap smears and pelvic exams.
Get vaccinated against the human papillomavirus (HPV).
Practice safe sex.
Do not smoke.
Early detection is key to successful treatment of cervical cancer. If you have any concerns about your cervical health, please talk to your doctor.
